DR KENNY CLARK MB.ChB, BSc (Hons), FRACGP
Clinic Director / Founder
with a special interest in Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome
Dr Kenny was born on the edge of the Kalahari desert but raised in Scotland. After completing a degree in Sports Science, he went on to study medicine at the University of Glasgow. Dr Kenny fell in love with an Australian girl and emigrated to Townsville in 2008. He did a number of rural placements whilst attached to the The Townsville Hospital and worked in a variety of roles, notably in ICU.
After solid grounding in the Australian Health system, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners as a specialist GP. Dr Kenny enjoys helping individuals and family members, young and old, achieve optimum health outcomes.
Being a Type 1 Diabetic, Dr Kenny has a passion for the care and management of Diabetes and also general health. He wants diabetics of all ages to live as full and healthy a life as possible. A keen sportsman and community minded, Kenny regularly gives talks to interested groups on healthy living and diabetes management.
DR ROY RASALAM MBBS, FRACGP, Phd Candidate
with a special interest in Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome
Dr Roy has a passion for the clinical care of Diabetes, Lipids and Metabolic Syndrome. He is Head of Clinical Skills at James Cook University, College of Medicine, Townsville. Dr Roy is recognised as a key thought leader in Diabetes and is co-author of the Diabetes Australia National Guidelines for Management of Diabetes, which includes guidelines on Lipid management.
He is involved in Diabetes clinical trials on diabetes complications, especially diabetic foot syndrome. He is also involved in scientific research regarding Lipid metabolism, with recent publications in “Lipids” and “hormones” in international medical journals. In his spare time, Dr Roy enjoys spending time with his family and trying to catch a barra!
DR JONNY FENTON MBBS, BSc, FRACGP
with a special interest in public health strategies
Dr Jonny was born in Ireland but moved to Scotland to study medicine at the University of Glasgow, and also attained a BSc in Medical Science, specifically looking at public health strategies. After finishing his medical degree Dr Jonny moved to London, working at the prestigious King’s College Hospital. He met his future wife Kate and moved to Melbourne, where he worked in the Emergency and ICU departments.
After a few years in Melbourne, family drew Dr Jonny and his wife back to the UK where he completed his GP training, working as a locum throughout Scotland. In 2017 Dr Jonny saw the light and made the move to sunny Townsville and was made a fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners as a specialist GP.
He has a wealth of experience working in diverse communities throughout the UK, and helping patients with complicated medical backgrounds. Dr Jonny's passionate about general practice, in particular the ability to provide continuity of care for patients and getting to know families within the practice. He enjoys the opportunity to deal with the diverse social and medical problems that present every day in general practice.
DR ELIZABETH STALEWSKI MBBS FRACGP CertSCM (SCCA) Cert D(SCCA)
with a special interest in skin cancer medicine and family planning
Dr Elizabeth grew up in Townsville and attained her medical degree at James Cook University in 2005. She travelled around the world working in different medical specialities in the UK and USA for nearly a decade before settling back in Townsville in 2014 with her four children. She has completed her GP training and has extra training in Skin Cancer Medicine and Family Planning.
With a background in many specialties, she has a keen interest in paediatrics, antenatal care and women’s health, travel medicine as well dermatology. She is also qualified in cosmetic injecting and minor surgical procedures such as skin cancers, ingrown toenails and contraceptive procedures.
Elizabeth has a passion for helping individuals and families during the ups and downs of everyday life.
DR AIMEE SMITH MBBS FRACGP
with special interest in Rural and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health
Born and raised in Townsville and having completed her medical training at James Cook University, Aimee feels privileged to be looking after families in the community she grew up in.
Aimee’s areas of interests have evolved from the clinical experiences she has had during her specialist training. She has a special interest in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, diabetes management as well as women’s and children’s health.
Aimee has attained her fellowship from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and will soon also gain her fellowship in Rural General Practice after working in Ingham and Palm Island. Aimee is excited to be joining The Diabetic GP Clinic team and looks forward to meeting you soon.
DR FREYJA PAGE MBBS FRACGP DRANZCOG
with a special interest in obstetrics, family planning and sexual health
Dr Freyja Page is originally from the UK but has been in Australia for the past 11 years and has Australian citizenship. She is a proud single mother of a gorgeous little boy who keeps her very busy when she is not at work. She is a self-proclaimed expert on every park with a climbing frame in Townsville!
She worked in hospital medicine for over 10 years in the fields of Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology before moving into General Practice. She is passionate about women’s health care and offers a wide range of related services, including all non-surgical forms of contraception (including Mirena insertion) and management of gynaecological issues for the mature woman.
She has diplomas in Obstetrics from the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists and in Family Planning and Sexual Health from Sexual Health and Family Planning Australia. She also enjoys working in the fields of mental and family medicine and has a diploma in Child Health from the University of Sydney.
Dr Prasad MBBS DCH
Dr Prasad graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in the year 2000 from Kuvempu University Karnataka in India. In 2006, Dr Prasad relocated to Australia. He moved to Townsville in 2007 for Emergency Medicine training and since then has called Townsville home.
Dr Prasad has been working in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine and has now moved into General Practice. He has a special interest in Sexual Health, Emergency Medicine and Skin. Other specialities Dr Prasad has practised in, include Paediatrics, Hyperbaric Medicine and Anaesthetics.
You might just recognise Dr Prasad as he has worked as a doctor for after-hour medical home services such as "Doctor to Your Door" and "House Call Doctor". It was this work which gave him an interest in General Practice. Dr Prasad is currently completing his final year of his Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. We were excited to welcome Dr Prasad to our clinic in July 2019.
SUZANNE RADFORD RN, CDE, GradDipPHC
Registered Nurse / Credentialed Diabetes Educator
We are very proud to have Suzanne Radford, our resident Registered Nurse and Credentialed Diabetes Educator, to North Queensland having moved from Sydney to join the team at The Diabetic GP Clinic.
Suzanne qualified as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the UK in 1996 and has a wealth of experience in both hospital settings, general practice nursing and Diabetes Education. Completing a Post-Graduate Certificate in Diabetes Education and Management in 2012, Suzanne became a Credentialed Diabetes Educator with the Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA) in 2014. She’s also recently completed a Graduate Diploma in Primary Healthcare Nursing from the University of Sydney.
Suzanne has experience working in nurse-led outpatient settings within renowned teaching hospitals in Sydney, NSW. She also has experience in Type 2 Diabetes group education, individual education and ward inpatient education. In her spare time, Suzanne enjoys yoga, walking and exploring her new home of Townsville!
MAHN COOKE BSc, AEP
Accredited Exercise Physiologist
Mahn Cooke is our Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) and member of Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA). Having studied at the James Cook University Townsville Campus, Mahn completed a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science in 2001.
Put simply, Mahn understands the important role exercise plays keeping you healthy, particularly if you have diabetes or are at risk of diabetes. Mahn specialises in exercise and lifestyle modification programs for the prevention and management of chronic disease and injury. He also specialises in exercise solutions for people with complex medical conditions that require exercise rehabilitation.
Mahn strives to ensure his practice is leading the way in the delivery of programs to address the needs of North Queenslanders. In his spare time, Mahn enjoys riding his bike, fishing, renovating his Queenslander or baby-wrangling with his new daughter Elise!
MANYA SCHEFTSIK BA, MA, PostGradDip
We're delighted to welcome Manya to the team. She has many years experience helping people change behaviours that can form part of a chronic condition.
These changes include becoming more physically active and fit; pain management; feeling in control of your eating; the moderate consumption of alcohol; smoking cessation (Manya is an accredited smoking cessation specialist) and cessation of problem gambling.
She also helps people to become aware of how their thinking and beliefs can undermine their attempts to make sustainable changes to their behaviour and ultimately their health. Manya's approach is both guilt and blame free as both are the biggest stumbling blocks on the path to healthy and satisfying living.
Manya is an LGTBI friendly practitioner with a sound history of experience in working in diverse communities.
ANDREA MCDONALD APD, CDE
Dietitian / Credentialed Diabetes Educator
Andrea McDonald is our Dietitian at The Diabetic GP Clinic. As a member of the Dietitians Association of Australia, Andrea is an Accredited Practitioner Dietitian (APD) and is also a Credentialed Diabetes Educator.
She has a wealth of experience providing quality and evidence-based dietitian services to patients throughout Townsville. One of Andrea’s key areas of interest in Dietetic Practice is Chronic Disease Management with a special interest in Diabetes.
Andrea shares in The Diabetic GP Clinic’s patient-centred approach and passion for improving the quality of life of those with diabetes and reducing the prevalence of type 2 diabetes and other diseases caused or associated with obesity.
In her spare time, Andrea enjoys motorbike riding and hiking.
Hanna Dixon is our Practice Coordinator at The Diabetic GP Clinic. Although young, she has extensive experience in medical administration and is an integral part of the practice.
Her smiling face is often the first thing you'll notice when arriving at the clinic; she makes it her business to get to know all of our patients and is passionate about providing the highest level of patient care and comfort. She is a computer wizard and a problem solver - not only does she coordinate consultations and make a very complex schedule work for everyone, she helps keep accounts in order.
Hanna is a Townsville local and when she’s not working, she enjoys travelling, having travelled throughout America, Europe and Indonesia. She also enjoys running, playing touch football, golf, 'boot' camps (!), listening to music and spending time with family and friends.
Liz Smith has an extensive administrative background having been employed by the Queensland Government for 15 years. Subsequent to this she has worked as a medical receptionist for 6 1/2 years, a role that she thoroughly enjoys.
She is originally from Central Queensland but has worked and lived in Brisbane, Mount Isa and Townsville which has been her home since 1976. Outside of work she enjoys gardening, cooking, travelling and spending time with family and friends and of course, her 4 legged “children”.
Candice Cummins is an experienced medical receptionist and also a Student Nurse. Having several years of medical reception experience, Candice decided it was time to take her passion in health care a step further, completing her first year of a Bachelor of Nursing with Central Queensland University in Townsville in 2017.
Born in Victoria on a Mallee farm, a working holiday around Australia became short lived. Only four months in, and a long weekend in Townsville, Candice and her partner decided to call Townsville home. Twelve years on, they are married with 3 beautiful little girls keeping them busy.
In her spare time, Candice enjoys spending time with friends and family, netball, kayaking, singing, fishing and camping.
